“I’VE FOUND I DON’T like the distance they place between us when you choose to kiss me,” she said softly, leaning over him, her hair spilling about him in silky soft waves as he pulled her down and over him.

David woke with a start. Hell, he hoped he hadn’t said her name out loud. The floor was full, several new apprentice lads having arrived in the last two weeks. He concentrated on slowing and quieting his breathing. Thankfully, though, Ian was making such a racket snoring, no one likely would’ve noticed any sound he might have made.

His dream had improvised some with her hair down around him; nice touch. That was one of his favorite memories of her, to be sure. But he had pages of others, somewhat less stirring, that he could pull out and flip through to lull himself back to sleep. He elbowed Ian in the ribs before he turned to his stomach.

Maybe he should try thinking of another lass. He ought to think of another; he needed to move on. Or how about he thought of Eunice? If he was thinking of taking her to wife, maybe he should try to work up some enthusiasm for it.

But thoughts of Elisabeth were the only thing that could begin to dull the ache that plagued him each night, and he had a while until it was time to rise, and he could lose himself in work. He needed to get through it, so he’d think of her.
